Hill Voice, 10 August 2026, Khagrachari: International Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2026 was observed in Khagrachari with demands for constitutional recognition, the preservation of indigenous languages and cultures, and the full implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord.

On August 9, organized by the International Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration Committee, Khagrachari, a colorful rally was brought out from Chengi Square, followed by a discussion meeting and a cultural event at the Marma Unnayan Sangsad auditorium in Milanpur.

Presided over by the Celebration Committee’s Joint Convener Pritimoy Chakma, the meeting was addressed by Dr. Mahmudul Sumon, Professor of Anthropology at Jahangirnagar University; writer and researcher Tanim Nawshad; Celebration Committee Convener Sudhakar Tripura, among other leaders.

Speakers emphasized that the CHT Accord was signed while upholding the integrity of the country; hence, labeling indigenous peoples as separatists is unjust. They called upon the state to dismantle propaganda and the misconception of viewing indigenous people as non-Muslims, and instead grant them full citizenship status, security, and constitutional recognition.

The event concluded after the discussion meeting with traditional music and dance performances.
