Indigenous family beaten up in Nawabganj, 4 accused

Hill Voice, 26 June 2020, Dinajpur:  It has been alleged that an indigenous family has been beaten up over a land dispute in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur district.

The incident took place on 22 June 2020 Monday night, at Chowk Naoda Adivasi Para in Mahmudpur Union of Nawabganj Upazila. It is learnt that a written complaint has been lodged against 4 persons with Nawabganj police station.

According to Sunil Murmu of Chawk Naoda village, the incident took place over a trivial incident regarding previous land dispute with Nazmal’s sons Taherul Islam (45), Saju Mian (36), Shariful Islam (36) and Monarul Islam (30).

At one stage of the altercation, there was a fight. While Sunil Murmu was screaming for help, his wife Anjuli Kisku (30)came forward. At that time, Taherul started beating Anjuli Kisku from behind.

At one point, Saju tried to drag Anjuli Kisku (Sunil’s wife) into the dark place. Later, when Sunil Mumur’s relatives came forward, Anjuli Kisku escaped from the clutches of the attackers.

Being the plaintiff in the incident, Sunil Murmu lodged a complaint with the Nawabganj Police Station on 24 June 2020 Wednesday.

Officer-in-charge of Nawabganj Police Station Ashok Kumar Chouhan said, “I have received the allegation and if it is found to be true, legal action will be taken.”

When the accused Taherul and Saju were contacted, they said that the allegation of assault and violence against women was not true. He defended himself by saying that they were being harassed on false charges.
