Attack on Rakhine family to occupy land in Kalapara, 3 women injured

Hill Voice, 26 June 2020, Patuakhali:  An indigenous Rakhine family was attacked by a local Muslim land robber with the intention of occupying the land of the indigenous Rakhine family in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district. At least three Rakhine women were reported injured.

According to local sources, this year as every year the elderly Majafru Rakhine has completed the planting work on her recorded land that was being cultivated for at least 50 years. A land grabber from the area named Abdur Rahim alias Kad Rahim along with 25-30 musclemen attacked the land owner while she was staying at home with his daughter Mawense and daughter-in-law Yiyi Rakhine.

Land robber Abdur Rahim uprooted the Aman saplings and started planting them again. The land grabbers have beaten Majafru along with her daughter and daughter-in-law while they went to forbade land grabbers. The assailants grabbed them by the mud and wrapped a scarf around their necks. When his relatives informed the police, the police went to the spot to rescue them.

On 26 June 2020 Sunday at 11:00 am, the attack on the minority Rakhine family continued for an hour. Rahim gang tried to occupy 3.24 acres of land in Khatian No. SA 269 of Sonapara Mouza.

The Rakhine family is currently in extreme panic. They are staying at the house of a relative in Kalapara municipality. Majafru said she has been cultivating these lands without any hindrance during her husband’s lifetime. This year, the identified land grabbers have suddenly made the attack.

After completed treatment at the emergency department of Kalapara Hospital at night, Mawense Rakhine filed a case with the Kalapara police station. Where Abdur Rahim Hawladar and 14 others have been named as accused. However, the police could not arrest anyone. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalapara police station Monirul Islam said, a case has been filed.

The OC further said that two rounds of raids have been carried out to arrest the accused. They could not be arrested as they were fugitives.

Majafru Rakhine alleged that the land grabbers were threatening to harass them with false charges.
