Hill Voice, 14 May 2022, Khagrachhari: A fifth grade indigenous Tripura student has been allegedly molested by a teacher in Ramgarh under Khagrachari. It is learnt that the victim’s family has filed a case against the accused teacher.

The incident took place at Thanachandra Para Government Primary School in No. 1 Ramgarh Union of Ramgarh upazila on Thursday (May 12) afternoon. Friday (May 13) afternoon, the victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police against the accused teacher through local people’s representatives and leaders of the Bangladesh Tripura Kalyan Sangsad.

The name of the accused teacher is Md. Belayet Hossain (42). He is the son of Md. Nurul Huda of Lamkupara area in the same union and assistant teacher of that school.

According to the case statement, last Thursday (May 12, 2022) at 3:30 pm after the school timing out, the accused teacher Md. Belayet Hossain asked two girls including the victim to be present at the classroom in the name of showing the housework.

He then took the victim out of the classroom by the side of the school’s tubewell leaving the other girl in the classroom and molested the victim on the most sensitive part of the body. At that time, the accused teacher sent the girl home with one hundred takas as she was physically ill.

After returning home, the girl reported the matter to her mother. On Friday (May 13) afternoon, her family lodged a complaint with the Ramgarh Police Station against the accused teacher through local people’s representatives and leaders of the Bangladesh Tripura Kalyan Sangsad.

It is learnt that outraged villagers have said they will not send their children to school unless disciplinary action is taken against the accused teacher. Earlier, the accused teacher was accused of behaving in the same manner while teaching in Matiranga, locals said.

Confirming the allegations, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramgarh police station Mohammad Shamsuzzaman said, “I have received the complaint and the case is under process. Legal action will be taken subject to investigation.”

It is to be noted that in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region, sexual violence against Jumma women and girls has been used by land grabbers, settlers, security forces and fanatic groups as a means of land grabbing, intimidation and ethnic cleansing. In 2021, 15 Jumma women were sexually harassed by Bengali settlers.

No justice has been done in the case of violence against Jumma women and girls in the CHT. Violence against Jumma women and girls continues as a result of lack of justice and impunity for those involved in the incident.
