Ctg-returnee Jumma worker abducted by army-backed UPDF-Democratic in Baghaichari

Hill Voice, 17 April 2020, Rangamati: An armed group of army-backed UPDF-democratic abducted a Jumma worker named Sukhamoy Chakma (27), s/o Nirota Ranjan Chakma, from Nash Number area bordering to Dighinala upazila of Khagrachari district and Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati district, on his way back to Baghaichhari from Chittagong on 16 April 2020, around 4:00 pm. After the abduction, Sukhamoy Chakma was severely beaten.

Later on, receiving the news, Sukhamoy Chakma’s father and the family members of the area brought Sukhamoy Chakma from capture of UPDF-Democratic with the promise of paying Tk one and half lakh in the evening 7:30 PM of 17 April and payment of more one and half lakh after three weeks.

At present, many others, including the Sukhamoy Chakma, are reported to have been at home quarantine at Nalbania Buddhist Bihar in Baghaichari who returned from Chittagong. The home of the Sukhamoy Chakma is in Nalbania village of Khedarama union of Baghaichhari upazila.

On the other hand, Sukhamoy Chakma’s father, in great distress, made a sum of Tk 65,000 and went to contact the UPDF-Democrats at Dwitila of Baghaichari, where the UPDF-Democratic members returned the money.

They tell to Sukhamoy Chakma’s father that if he cannot pay Rs 1.5 lakh tomorrow morning, 18 April, his son will have to hand them over again.

It is reported that Sukhamoy Chakma is a member of the Central Committee of Hill Workers Welfare Forum in Chittagong.
