Memorandum of 4 Chakma orgs of India demanding punishment for those involved in the killing of monks

Hill Voice, 9 February 2022, International Desk: Four organizations of the Chakma community in the Indian state of Tripura have demanded immediate punishment for those involved in the brutal killing of Bishuddha Mahathero in Khagrachari and the attempted stabbing of Jnanjyoti monk in Chittagong. A memorandum has been submitted to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.

On Tuesday (February 8) a memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina through the SDM of Gandacherra on behalf of four organizations of Chakma community in the Indian state of Tripura, namely, the Chakma Student Association (TCSA), the Chakma Samajik Rejya Parishad, the Chakma Buddhist Welfare Society and the Chakma Gabujje Jada, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of those involved in the persecution of Buddhists and Hindus by Muslims in Bangladesh, hacking to brutal death of Ven. Bishuddha Mahathero, founder and principal of Dharmasukh Bihara in Khagrachhari Sadar on January 30, and the attempted stabbing of Jnanajyoti monk in Chittagong on January 31.

Before handing over the memorandum, people from different parts of the Indian state of Tripura gathered at the Gandacherra Hospital area and from there a protest procession started and ended in front of the Gandachara SDM’s office.

It was stated at the rally that despite protests from different countries including Bangladesh and identification of those involved and demanding punishment, the government has not been able to identify and punish any person so far.

At the rally, Milon Bikash Chakma, president of the Chakma Student Association (TCSA), called on the Bangladesh government to expedite the punishment of those involved in the killings and warned that if more such incidents took place in the future, there would be bigger protests.
