Indigenous Marma youth detained by army in Rowangchari

Hill Voice, 19 August 2022, Bandarban: It has been alleged that an innocent indigenous Marma youth named Chashwemong Marma (36), son of Aungthowai Ching Marma has been a victim of apprehension by the army personnel of Rowangchari army camp in Rowangchari upazila under Bandarban hill district. It is learnt that the army personnel took him from his house and detained him in the camp.

This incident of detaining was taken place by a group of army personnel of Rowangchari army camp Yesterday on August 18, 2022 at around 9:00 pm. Chashwemong Marma’s house is in Natun Para village of Rowangchari Sadar Upazila area.

According to local sources, at around 9:00 pm as soon as the soldiers entered into the house of Chashwemong Marma they pointed guns at him and asked Chashwemong Marma to deposit his arms to them. Even when Chashwemong Marma replied that he had no weapons, the army took him to the camp.

When Chashwemong Marma and his family asked why he was being taken away with them, they said that he is a member of the JSS group and on leave now.

As of writing this report, the release of Chashwemong Marma has not been known.

Meanwhile, Chashwemong Marma’s family is said to be in deep worry after the incident. They fear that the army is conspiring to implicate him in false cases.
