Attack on Jummas during football match in Matiranga, 3 injured

Hill Voice, 4 October 2020, Khagrachari: Members of the Jumma football team participating in a football tournament organized by local Awami League leader and UP Chairman Ali Akbar in Baranal union in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district have been allegedly attacked. It has been reported that 3 people were seriously injured. The incident took place on the afternoon of October 3, 2020.

According to local sources, a football tournament was organized at the ground of Dakbangla Muktiyuddha High School in Barnal Union on the initiative of Awami League leader and No.3 Barnal UP Chairman Ali Akbar and some Awami League leaders. There, besides the team of Bengalis from different areas, Jumma students and youths also formed teams and took part in the football tournament.

The opening game of the tournament started at 5:30 pm yesterday. Jumma students and youths team Thailapara XI vs Dakbangla XI (Bengali) competed in the game. Jumma students-youth team Thailapara XI won the game. But when the Awami League leaders could not accept it and used their power to harass and humiliate the winning Thailapara XI team, the Jumma players protested.

Enraged by this, Awami League, Chhatra League leaders and activists led by Chairman Ali Akbar attacked the winning Thailapara XI team members and beat them indiscriminately with sticks. Chairman Ali Akbar himself allegedly beat with a stick in his hand.

The three players of Thailapara XI team who were seriously injured in the attack are- 1. Upen Marma, son of Babu Master; 2. Rimrachai Marma, son of Nithai Marma and 3. Mangshiu Marma, son of unknown. Many more were reported injured.

Seriously injured Upen Marma is currently undergoing treatment at Matiranga Upazila Hospital.
