A Jumma beaten in Baghaichhari and a Rakhine youth wounded in Ramu

Hill Voice, 23 May 2020:  It has been alleged that a Jumma was beaten by a group of settlers in Baghaichhari of Rangamati district and another indigenous Rakhine youth was attacked and injured by influential land grabbers in Ramu of Cox’s Bazar district.

It has been reported that on May 22, 2020, Friday afternoon, a Jumma litchi seller was reportedly beaten by a group of settlers in Amtuli Union of Baghaichhari Upazila.

The victim was identified as Promod Chakma, 38, son of Juddha Chandra Chakma of Pakoakhali village in Ward 9 of Sarboatli Union of Baghaichhari Upazila.

It is learnt that the Bengali settlers led by Amtuli Union Chairman Rasel Chowdhury carried out this surprise attack on Promod Chakma.

On the other hand, on the night of May 10, 2020, an influential land grabber named Kamru Uddin Member attacked and seriously injured Lunkya Rakhine, a resident of Dakshin Srikul village in Fatehkharkul union of Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

Despite a land-related case is under trial in the court and allegations filed with the police station, Kamru Uddin member is alleged to have carried out the attack in a terrorist manner, with aim to occupy the land belonging to said victim. Kamru Uddin member Lunkya is threatening to kill Lungkya Rakhine.

The Ramu Upazila Rakhine Buddhist Welfare Association has strongly condemned and protested the heinous attack on the tribal community by land grabbers.
