Hill Voice, 28 December 2023, Rangamati: The accused rapists of two girls in Balukhali of Rangamati were reportedly caught at last at the hand of locals in the boarder area of Jurachari and Barkal upazila. Informing the Jurachari police, the people handed over the rapists to them.
The two held rapists are Rubel Chakma (26), son of- Arun Chakma, Address- Ward No. 5 of Banajogichara union and Russell Chakma (30), son of- Akshay Chakma, address- Ward No. 4 of Banajogichara union of Jurachari upazila.
On December 27 around 10 am, the masses held the two rapists from Goahat Chara area, a boarder of Jurachari and Barkal upazila, under Aimachara union. Then they handed over the detainees to the elders of Thachipara village in Jurachari union. On the day, the Thachipara people handed over to the Officer-in-Charge of Jurachari police station with the help of chairman and vice chairman of Jurachari union parishad around 10 pm.
It has been reported that the police will take the two accused to the Rangamati Kotwali Police Station today. It is to be noted that on behalf of the victim’s family, a case was filed against the two accused along with two other unknown persons under the section 9(1)/30 of Women and Child Repression Prevention Act of 2000 (Amended in 2003) with Rangamati Kotwali Police Station on December 26, 2023.
According to local source, the biggest religious festival of Christians- Christmas festival was held on 24 December 2023 at Basanta Pankhua Para of Balukhali union in Rangamati Sadar upazila under Rangamati hill district. Many from nearby Jurachari upazila also went to visit the event as the two victimized girls.
After the event, around 2.00/3.00 am, the victims came looking for vehicle to return home. At that moment, the persons waylaid the girls outside- Rubel Chakma and Russel Chakma along with others two persons- asked the victims to go with them. Reportedly, as the frequent insistences were refused, the 4 youths abducted and raped the girls in a Jum ghar (Jum house) near the Pankhua Para.
It was learnt that the rapists are actively associated with Awami Jubo League politics.
