Hill Voice, 30 May 2023, Rangamati: It has been reported that two indigenous Jummas have been arrested separately by Army and joint forces from Rangamati hill district town area. However, it is not known for sure why the arrest was made.
According to local sources, yesterday, May 29, 2023, around 4 pm, a team of the army arrested a person named Rebati Chakma (55), son of Suresh Chakma from Banarupa Samataghat area of Rangamati town. Rebati Chakma’s house is in Kuramara village of Bandukbhanga union of Rangamati Sadar upazila.
On the other hand, on May 27, 2023, around 8 am, a team of joint forces arrested another person named Siddhartha Chakma (60), son of late Madhu Sudhan Chakma from his house in Bhedvedi area of Rangamati town. At around 2.30 pm on that day, the joint forces took Siddhartha Chakma handcuffed to the Rangamati Sadar Hospital.
According to a witness who did not want to be named, Siddhartha Chakma was taken to the hospital for treatment after the torture. According to another source, Siddhartha Chakma was taken to the hospital for a check-up before being remanded.
However, it is not known for sure why both of them were detained or on what charges. On the other hand, till the writing of this report, it is not known whether the two persons have been brought before the court or handed over to the police as per the law.
It is to be noted that on May 24, 2023 at approximately 8:00 pm, someone killed a person named Prabhat Chakma (47) in Monghar area near Bhedvedi area. After the incident, the deceased Prabhat Chakma’s wife filed a case against Siddhartha Chakma and others. It is believed that Siddhartha Chakma has been arrested due to that case.
