Hill Voice, 14 March 2023, Bandarban: It has been alleged that an innocent Marma student seeking admission in the university, resident of Sadar area of Rowangchari Upazila under Bandarban district, was brutally beaten and humiliated by the army. As a result of the beating by the army, the Marma student suffered severe injuries on his hand and back.

Today, March 14, 2023, around 9.35 am, this inhuman behavior and beating happened by the army personnel of Rowangchari Army Camp at the entrance of Suanlu Para of Rowangchari Upazila Sadar.

The name of the victim Marma student is Ushwemong Marma (24), son of Ukyaching Marma, Village-Madhyam Para, Rowangchari Sadar Upazila. Ushwemong Marma is said to be preparing for university admission after passing HSC from Dhaka’s Lalmatia College this year.

According to local sources, in view of the recent incident in which army personnel were killed and injured in the firing by armed cadres of KNF known as the Bawm Party, the army of Rowangchari army camp set up a check post next to the house of Thanchang member (former) at the entrance of Suanlu Para from yesterday (March 13).

This morning (March 14), Ushwemong Marma was going on a motorcycle to the ‘Hill Child Development Board’ in Suanlu Bawm Para along with her elder sister Kilyu Marma (33), wife of Uthowaiching Marma to receive bags from there.

At that time, the army personnel stopped the motorcycle and asked, ‘Where are you going? What do you do?’ In response, Ushwemong Marma said that, ‘we are going to Suanlu to get a bag for my nephew. I have just passed HSC and am coaching for admission in Jahangirnagar University.’

Hearing the words, the army personnel all laughed loudly and said in the tone of mocking, ‘You will study in the university? With this face!’

Then the army men asked Ushwemong Marma to show the motocycle documents. Ushwemong had the documents brought by a friend and showed them to the army. But even then, without any reason, the army personnel hit Ushwemong Marma on the back 5 times and legs 4 times with a hard wood stick right in front of her sister.

After the incident, Ushwemong and her sister went to the UNO (Upazila Nirbahi Officer) and asked for justice, but the UNO replied that there was nothing to do.
