Human chain in Khagrachari in protest of rape and violence against women

Hill Voice, 9 October 2020, Khagrachari: A human chain has been held in Khagrachari to protest against rape, torture and violence of women all over the country including Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). The human chain was organized by Women Resource Network, Chittagong Hill Tracts in front of Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner’s Office at 10 am on 8 October 2020.

The human Chain program was moderated by Kyaprusai Marma, President of Khagrachhari District Branch of Bangladesh Marma Students Council and chaired by Shefalika Tripura, Coordinator of Women Resources Network, Chittagong Hill Tracts and given a welcome speech by Journalist Abu Daud, organizer of Nari o Shishu Protirodh Forum.

Also Shuicing Thui, General Secretary of Human Rights Commission, Khagrachhari District Branch, Arun Kanti Chakma, Executive Director of ALO, Mathura Bikash Tripura, Executive Director of Zabarang Kalyan Samiti, Advocate Nasir Uddin, Sujan’s Representative, Namita Chakma, representative of Durbar Nari Network, Chingmepru Marma, district coordinator of Women Resources Network, Nakhhatra Tripura, General Secretary of Tripura Students Forum, Mongsai Marma, Central Vice President of Bangladesh Marma Students Council, Rubel Biswas, Representative of One Stop Crisis delivered solidarity speech.

Students and teachers including activists of various social, cultural, professional organizations, journalists and human rights activists participated in the human chain program.

Speakers at the human chain said the level of violence against children and women in the country has increased abnormally over the past few months. We need to ensure speedy trial and highest punishment for all forms of violence, including rape, child and women abuse.

The speakers also demanded that the country’s existing laws be changed to stop rape. The children should be taught ethics, good education and respect for women at home. In the last few days, women are suffering from insecurity due to the way women are being tortured, oppressed and raped all over the country including Chittagong Hill Tracts.

At that time, the speakers demanded capital punishment of all the rapists in the country.
