Harassment, torture and temporary detention of 3 Jumma villagers by army in Subalong

Hill Voice, March 5, 2023, Rangamati: It has been alleged that three innocent Jumma villagers of Subalong Union under Barkal Upazila of Rangamati district have been harassed, tortured and temporarily detained by the Bangladesh Army.

The victim three villagers are identified as (1) Shantashil Chakma Boli (46), son of late Ranjan Bikash Chakma, Village-Hajachara, No.6 Ward, Subalong Union, (2) Gyanashish Chakma Kalabo (26), son of Ashwini Kumar Chakma, Village-Hajachara, No.6 Ward, Subalong Union and (3) Sajib Chakma Gabala (26), son of Panchacharan Chakma, Village-Kilyachara, No.3 Ward, Subalong Union.

According to local sources, today 5 March 2023, Sunday, around 2 am, a group of 2 Bengal Army under the leadership of Major Maruf of Banajogichara Army Zone of Jurachari Upazila went to the neighboring Subalong and surrounded the houses and woke up the said three villagers. After that, the villagers, putting a local made gun with them, were gathered together and taken to the army zone.

It is known that the army personnel beat up the three villagers in Banajogichara army zone. It is reported that the said villagers were released around 2 pm today after being detained and physically and mentally tortured for about 12 hours.

However, the victims did not know why the army woke up the villagers so late at night and beat them up.
