Hill Voice, 9 September 2020, Rangamati: One Jumma tea shopkeeper has been shot dead by army-backed UPDF (Democratic) and Reformist armed group in the Ghilachhari area of Naniyarchar upazila in Rangamati. The named of deceased is Suresh Kumar Chakma (45). He is a resident of Shikalya Para area of Ghilachhari.
The murder took place in the Rubber Bagan area of Ghilachhari on the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road at around 10:00 pm on Tuesday.
According to local sources, a group of armed terrorists of the army-backed UPDF (Democratic) and Reformists came in front of Suresh Chakma’s tea shop in an auto rickshaw around 10 pm on Tuesday and shot him. After confirming the death, they left the place. The local peoples took the body to his own house in Shikalya Para.
According to another source in the area, Reformist and UPDF (Democratic) armed groups in Ghilachhari have been demanding extortion from the public for the past few weeks. So, Suresh Chakma could be killed for not paying extortion.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nanyachar Police Station Sabbir Hossain said he had already visited the spot. He confirmed the truth of the incident. However, who committed the incident can be said to be subject to investigation.
