Hill Voice, 16 July 2020, Dhaka: It has been alleged that a gold trader named Tapan Karmakar (45) was hacked to death under Dohar police station in Dhaka district and wife of his elder brother Krishna Karmakar was also picked up by the miscreants.
The incident took place in East Latakhola area of Dohar upazila on Tuesday night, July 14, 2020. Later on Wednesday (July 15) morning, the locals rescued the housewife from a pond next to the house.
According to Santosh Kumar Mahato’s Facebook wall, the deceased was identified as Tapan Karmakar, son of late Gopal Karmakar of East Latakhola village in the upazila. He had a gold shop in Latakhola area.
Tapan’s elder brother Krishna Karmakar said, “I was eating at home around 11:45 pm on Tuesday night. My wife was with me too. Others were sleeping in their own rooms. At that time, some miscreants wearing masks and raincoats opened the main gate in front of the house and entered. They had Ram’da (metal sharp weapon) in their hands.
He further said that when my younger brother Tapan Karmakar came out of the house after hearing our screams, the miscreants started chopping him indiscriminately. In the wrath of the miscreants, various parts of my brother’s stomach came out and a finger of his hand was severed. Later, the miscreants grabbed holding my wife’s face and forcibly took her away.
After the miscreants left, the neighbors came forward when they heard screams. They rescued the critically injured Tapan and took him to Dohar Upazila Health Complex. As the condition was critical, the doctor on duty sent him to Dhaka after first aid.
He died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12 noon on Wednesday. Several teams of Dohar police visited the spot immediately after the incident on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, the locals saw the housewife lying in a bush in the East Latakhola area with her hands, legs and face tied. She was later rescued by locals and admitted to a local private hospital. As of this writing, the housewife is reported to be in good health.
Police officers including Dohar Circle ASP Zahirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge Dohar police station Sajjad Hossain, OC (Investigation) Arafat Hossain came to the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
Zahirul Islam, ASP of Dohar Circle, said it was initially thought that the attack was due to previous hostilities. Various issues are being investigated. We will soon be able to unravel the mystery of this incident and arrest the culprits. At the same time, a murder case is being processed with the police station, the police official said.
The Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajot (BJJM) strongly condemned and protested the barbaric attack on 16 July and demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment.
