Hill Voice, 25 September 2024, International Desk: American Jumma Council organised a demonstration against communal attack at Khagrachari-Dighinala-Rangamati in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) on indigenous Jumma peoples by the Muslim settlers with the support of Bangladesh military in New York, USA, on 24 September 2024.

In this demonstration, among others, Dinalo Chakma, a PhD student of University of Florida, Chanchana Chakma, at el delivered speech, while Sushil Chakma, Mong A Prue, Manojit Chakma, Arnob Dewan also played key role in organising the event.

After demonstration, Amerian Jumma Council submitted memorandum to Dr. Mohammed Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh through Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations. A separate memorandum was also submitted to Mr. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Jumma Amerian Council state in the memorandum that the barbaric communal attack in Dighinala, Khagrachari and Rangamati held on September 18, 19 and 20, 2024 was the latest one. This sort of human rights violations occurs time to time which indigenous Jumma peoples do not want to happen.

It added that “Your intervention in this havoc of the CHT by asking the Chief Advisor will highly be appreciated and we place some recommendations before you to convince the interim government for implementation immediately–

1) Form a neutral committee and investigate the incidents thoroughly that took place in Dighinala, Khagrachari and Rangamati
2) Punish the guilty persons involved in the incidents
3) Compensate or rehabilitate the victims or dead persons’ kins
4) Implement the CHT Accord fully.”
