Hill Voice, 24 March 2022, Rangamati: It has been alleged that three Jumma youths were searched and beaten by the DGFI of the Army at around 9:00 pm on March 21, 2022 in Ghagra Bazar area of Kaukhali in Rangamati Hill District.
According to local sources, three Jumma youths searched and beaten by DGFI are residents of Ghagra Union of Kaukhali Upazila.
The victims were identified as Jewel Chakma (16) son of Pratik Kumar Chakma, a resident of Harangi refugee camp, a hired motorcycle driver by profession; Nirmal Chakma (18), son of Punangchan Chakma and Ronel Chakma (18), son of Karan Bikash Chakma, both are of Levapara village.
It is learnt that on March 21, 2022, Nirmal Chakma and Ronel Chakma went to Rangamati town to repair their mobile phones. After repairing the mobile, they were returning home as passengers on Jewel Chakma’s motorcycle. Then they came to Ghagra Bazaar and were recharging money on their mobile phone in a shop. Just at that time at 9:00 pm, 10-12 men introducing themselves as detective led by Md. Tareq, a member of DGFI and Army Spy Milton Tanchangya, called them to the ground floor of the Sonali Bank building. There, they searched and beat the youths with various threats.
But after beating and searching, and finding nothing illegal from them and it was reported that the youths were handed over to their respective guardians taking their pictures and with conditions at 10:30 pm that night.
It is learnt that Md. Tareq who was involved in the incident is said to be in charge of DGFI staff in Ghagra area. He is quite well known in the area.
There are allegations against him that various people in the area have been victim of various misdeeds including harassment by him.
On the other hand, the Jummas of the area are in a state of panic as the incident became known.
