Hill Voice, 19 April 2025, Rangamati: At the end of last month (March), it was alleged that army personnel arrested an innocent Jumma in Bilaichari Union of Bilaichari Upazila under Rangamati District and handed him over to the police on a false case.
The name of the victim is Lamba Hula Tanchangya (50), son of Bichi Tanchangya, village-Sugdhan Para, No.3 Ward, Bilaichari Union.
According to local sources, on March 25, 2025, Lamba Hula Tanchangya went to Bilaichari bazar to sell bananas from his plantation. After selling bananas, Lamba Hula Tanchangya sat down to have launch at Manik Chakma’s shop at Hospital Ghat. At around 11 am, a group of army arrived and arrested Lamba Hula Tanchangya from there. Then at around 12 pm, Lamba Hula Tanchangya was taken to Bilaichari Army Zone. Then at around 2 pm, the army handed over Lamba Hula Tanchangya to Bilaichari police station.
Immediately after this, local Jumma leaders including public representatives went to Bilaichari police station and demanded the release of Lamba Hula Tanchangya, but he was not released. Later, it is learnt that Lamba Hula Tanchangya was implicated in a false case and sent to Rangamati jail.
According to local sources, when Lamba Hula Tanchangya sat down to have launch at Manik Chakma’s shop after selling bananas, Nagajya Chakma Bogara, a resident of Bangaltali village, known as an army spy (informer), sat next to him and took several pictures of Lamba Hula Tanchangya on his mobile phone. After taking the picture, he sent those to the army and gave false information to the army that Lamba Hula Tanchangya was an extortionist and a terrorist. Based on his information, the army later came there and arrested Lamba Hula Tanchangya indiscriminately.
It is learnt that although almost 25 days have passed as of the writing of this report, Lamba Hula Tanchangya, the victim of arrest and false charges, has not been released.
