Allegation of land grabbing by settlers in Rangamati

Hill Voice, 8 February 2025, Rangamati: It is alleged that settlers have occupied the land of an indigenous Jumma person in Gabaghona of Ward No. 2 of Magban Union under Rangamati Sadar Upazila, for building a restaurant.

The affected landowner is Gyana Lal Chakma (55), son of the late Khagendra Chakma.

Local sources said, Gyana Lal Chakma has inherited and possessed his father’s property for a long time. However, on January 25, the settlers from the Bengali settler Para (neighborhood) of Gabaghona—Md. Zahir (58) son of Amjad Hossain, Md. Maiuddin (35) son of the late Mahbub Alam, and Md. Iqbal (32) son of Md. Totamia—began constructing a restaurant on the inherited land of the Jumma.

It has been learnt that the Gabaghona Army Camp and Jibtali Army Camp have instigated to the settlers in their efforts to grab the land. Additionally, local headmen and Karbaris are being threatened to refrain from assisting the Jumma community in this matter.
