Army patrols, harassment, intimidation in Jurachhari and Rangamati sadar upazila

Hill Voice, 15 November 2024, Rangamati: It is reported that Army recently conducted patrol operation in Jumma villages of Jurachari Upazila and Rangamati Sadar Upazila under Rangamati district. During the patrolling operation, army personnel reportedly surrounded the house, harassed the owner of the house, entered the Buddhist monastery wearing shoes and created a climate of fear in the area.

According to local sources, yesterday 14th November 2024 at around 7:30 pm, an army team of 15/20 people led by a Subedar from Shilchari army camp under 2 Bir Army Zone located in Banjogichara Union of Jurachari Upazila conducted a patrol operation in Ward No. 1 area of ​​Jurachhari Union.

At that time, army personnel surrounded the house of a villager named Jewel Chakma, son of Sadhan Kumar Chakma of Ghilatali (Bhagygala) village of Ward No. 4. Jewel Chakma was not at home at that time. Army personnel searched for Jewel Chakma. Jewel Chakma’s family members were terrified. Jewel Chakma was said to be in Rangamati for business purposes that day.

After that, the army personnel searched the surrounding area and returned to the camp without finding Jewel Chakma.

On the other hand, on November 10, 2024, around 9 am, an army team led by a Subedar from the Rajmanipara army camp of Balukhali Union of Rangamati Sadar Upazila conducted a patrol operation in Kaindya area using a trawler boat. After staying there for 2-3 hours, the troop camped at Badalchari Government Primary School and spent the night there. This army patrol created anxiety among the Jumma villagers.

Besides, on November 8, 2024, around 10 am, an army patrol team of 10-12 people led by a subedar from Pangkhopara army camp under Banjogichara army zone of Jurachhari went to Bhijakijing para Buddhist hut. During this time, the military personnel entered the Buddhist temple wearing shoes and hats without permission and violating religious rituals. Later stayed overnight at Bhijakijing Government Primary School and returned to camp the next day.
