Hill Voice, 26 December 2023, Jurachhari: About 20 Jumma families were reportedly affected by the ongoing expansion work of transit road under the supervision of “Chittagong Construction Division of Bangladesh Army” in Ward No. 4, 5 and 6 in Dumdumya union of Jurachari Upazila in Rangamati hill district. It is learnt that plantations around 15 families were destroyed, and houses and shops of 5 families were vandalized.
It is to be noted, about 611 acres of land to be required to complete Rajastali-Bilaichari-Jurachari-Barkal-Thegamukh link road as per a report published by the Local Government Engineering Department of the Government of Bangladesh in June 2016. According to a survey, 114 acres of lands are to be acquired, and 564 families, 241 plantations and 10 cultural infrastructures (3 mosques, 3 temples and 4 schools) would be affected with 157 trader losers of their business timbers if the route is constructed.
The list of affected plantations of 15 families is:
1. Suresh Chandra Chakma, son of- Bijumon Chakma, Village: Raktachara Para, Ward No 6, Dumdumya union. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees, 10 white trees, 20 mango trees, 35 orange trees.
2. Lakshmi Rajnan Chakma, son of- Debajit Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No 6, Dumdumya union. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees, 10 white trees.
3. Krishana Chakma, son of – Fakir Chakma, village- Karlyachari. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees, 15 white trees.
4. Shanti Ranjan Chakma, son of- Brisa Chandra Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No 6, Dumdumya Union. Amount of damage- 60 teak trees.
5. Kalo Ranjan Chakma, son of- Krishna Mohan Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No. 6, Dumdumya Union. Amount of damage – 100 teak trees, 20 white trees, 5 orange trees, 10 jackfruit trees.
6. Manuranjan Chakma, son of- Krishna Mohan Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No. 6, Dumdumya Union. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees, 10 white trees, 5 jackfruit trees and 6 mango trees.
7. Jagdish Chakma, son of- Amar Dhan Chakma, village- Lombachara mukh. Amount of damage – 150 teak trees, 10 white trees.
8. Kaloketu Chakma, son of- late Rattoram Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No 6, Dumdumya Union. Amount of damage – 160 teak trees and 10 white trees.
9. Runi Chakma, son of- Mangal Chandra Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No. 6, Dumdumya Union. Amount of damage – 30 teak trees and 10 white trees.
10. Rupesh Karbari, son of- unknown. Amount of damage – 20 teak trees and 5 white trees.
11. Ratna Mon Chakma, son of- Uday Kumar Chakma, Amount of damage- 70 teak trees and 5 white trees.
12. Nipon Chakma, son of- Haja Muni Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No 6, Dumdumya union. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees.
13. Asim Chakma, son of- Amar Dhan Chakma, Village- Karlyachari, Ward No. 6, Dumdumya union. Amount of damage – 25 teak trees, 5 white trees.
14. Ashok Kumar Chakma, son of- Sashiraj Chakma, Village- Dumdumya. Amount of damage – 50 teak trees.
15. Laksmi Lal Chakma, son of- Laksmi Chandra Chakma, village- Karalyachari, ward no 6, Dumdumya union. Amount of damage- 50 teak trees and 6 white trees.
Notably, all of the trees but Manuranjan Chakma are under 4-6 years.
