Hill Voice, 26 April 2023, Bandarban: It has been reported that 51 Rohingya nationals have been detained in Lama Upazila of Bandarban district in a joint search by police and army. Of them, 21 were arrested from bus and 30 from jeep. It is known that these residents of the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar used to work as laborers in the remote hilly areas of Bandarban.
They were arrested from Yangcha check post area of Lama-Fansiakhali road of upazila on Wednesday (April 26) at noon. All those arrested were residents of Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Currently they are sheltered refugees in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp.
According to the related sources including the police, 21 Rohingyas were going towards Chakaria by a passenger bus from Alikadam. On the other hand, 30 Rohingyas were going to Alikadam by jeep from Chakaria. On the way, at the Yangcha check post, the army personnel led by police in-charge Abul Hashem Mirza searched the two vehicles. At one point, 51 people in two vehicles were detained if they could not show their national identity cards or any other valid documents.
Detained Karim, Rahamatullah and others said that they came out of the Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhia Upazila of Cox’s Bazar and worked as laborers in plantations owned by different people in Bandarban.
It is also known that hundreds of Rohingyas have escaped from the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar and are involved in theft, robbery, murder, extortion in 7 upazilas including Lama, Alikadam, Naikhyongchari of Bandarban, and many are engaged as laborers in plantation and construction works owned by different individuals in the district.
It is to be noted that so far, about 50,000 (fifty thousand) Rohingyas have infiltrated into the three hill districts including Bandarban, according to various sources.
