Hill Voice, 11 April 2020, Rangamati: The army have arrested Chairman of Dumdumya Union, Shantiraj Chakma and another villager named Anand Chakma in connection with the shooting death of a UP member, Hemanta Chakma, in Jurachhari upazila of Rangamati Hill district.
According to local sources, on 10 April 2020 at around 11:00 PM, Hemant Chakma, a member of Ward No. 2 of the Banajogichhara union, was killed in the bullet firing.
The incident was taken place in front of a shop near Hemant Chakma’s house in Dhamai Para under Ward No. 2 of the Banajogichhara union.
However, locals could not confirm how Hemant Chakma was shot or was shot by whom.
Local sources said that immediately after the incident, the army went to the spot and took Anand Chakma from his house and Shanthiraj Chakma, Chairman of Dumdumya Union, from the Jurachhari upazila headquarters at 1:00 AM.
Relatives of the detainees said that immediately after the incident, the army held Shantaraj Chakma and Anand Chakma intriguingly and intentionally.
Army officials are denying that they apprehended Shantiraj and Ananda when relatives approached the army in the morning.
The incident caused widespread panic and fear in the area.
Locals also said that more than 40 army members were moving towards Naraichhari of Bilaichhari Upazila on April 11 Saturday by four trawlers from Kaptai Jetighat Ice Land Camp. Another group of army has taken station at Hijachhari Government Primary School.
On the other hand, another group of soldiers from the Fakirachari camp in Jurachari went out for patrolling in Balish Para, Panchari and Bame Maidang.
