Allegation of a new BGB checkpoint set up in Barkal, sparks public fear

Hill Voice, 22 October 2025, Rangamati: It has been reported that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has set up four new checkpoints in different unions under Barkal Upazila of Rangamati District.

It has been learnt that the 37 BGB under the Rajnagar Zone has established a checkpoint at the passenger shed in Srinagar Bazaar of Barohorina Union, while the 12 BGB under the Choto Harina Zone has set up checkpoints in Tagolokchara Dor, Valukkechari, Thega Dor and Pulchhara Dor of Dhummatlang Mouza forcibly occupying land. Under the pretext of ensuring security, they are reportedly harassing ordinary people in the name of searches and inspections.

As a result, a sense of fear and anxiety is now prevailing among the local people.

On the other hand, last Sunday (19 October), military operations continued under the command of Lt. Colonel Md. Hasan Sezan, psc, Zone Commander of 2 Bir Bonjogichara, and Major Md. Asif, Sub-Zone Commander of 60 Bengal Subalong. The local residents are reportedly living in constant fear as a result of these operations.

It is noteworthy that, as of 2025, there are currently 66 army, Ansar, BGB, and police camps in Barkal Upazila. Among them, 53 are BGB camps, making Barkal Upazila the area with the highest number of military camps among the three hill districts.
