Hill Voice, 20 October 2025, Bandarban: It has been reported that a Mro villager named Menroya Mro, a resident of Tau Para in Lama Sadar Union under Lama Upazila of Bandarban Hill District, has been a victim of medical discrimination by a doctor at Lama Government Hospital.
According to the victim and local residents, on 19 October 2025, Menroya Mro (34), s/o Mennaw Mro and Sangchun Mro, a resident of Tau Para in Lama Sadar Union, suddenly fell ill. Due to the remote and difficult road conditions, villagers carried him on their shoulders to a lab in Lama Bazaar for a malaria test. Although a sample was given for the test, the results were delayed. Realizing the severity of the patient’s condition, the lab health workers recommended that he be admitted to Lama Government Hospital.
Following the lab workers’ advice, when Menroya Mro was taken to Lama Government Hospital, the on-duty doctors, instead of admitting him and providing treatment, kept instructing the attendants to move him from one cabin to another. Despite being shifted more than four times, he did not receive any medical attention. During this time, Menroya Mro repeatedly lost consciousness. After waiting continuously for 4–5 hours without receiving any treatment, the frustrated and disheartened villagers took the patient back home late at night. It has been reported that Menroya Mro’s condition remains extremely critical due to being denied treatment.
It has been learnt that a similar incident happened to the victim’s daughter about four months ago.
Regarding the denial of medical care, the villagers stated that it is a doctor’s duty to provide treatment without considering a person’s ethnicity or caste. However, on that day, a deeply unfortunate incident occurred. We were subjected to medical discrimination and deprivation.
