A Tanchangya woman attempted to rape by the Rohingya militants in Naikhyongchari

Hill Voice, 13 November 2025, Bandarban: It has been reported that a Tannchangya woman was subjected to an attempted rape by Rohingya militants in a village called Hatimara Para, located between Ghumdhum Union and Sonaichari Union under Reju Mouza in Naikhyongchari Upazila of Bandarban District.

It has been learnt that the attempted rape occurred around 5:30 pm on Wednesday (12 November) and was carried out by armed members of the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), a militant group of Rohingya refugees. The woman’s husband was identified as the late Longbu Aung Tanchangya of Hatimara Para.

According to local sources, that afternoon, while the victim was returning home after buying various items from the market for her daughter’s wedding, she was suddenly stopped by a group of 10–15 members of the RSO after crossing the Jamirtali canal and walking along a hilly path. The armed men reportedly threatened her and attempted to rape her.

At that moment, within about 15–20 minutes, 8–10 Jumma youths who were on their way to the wedding arrived at the scene, allowing the Tanchangya woman to escape the attempted rape. When the youths questioned the men about their identity, they claimed to be members of the RSO and stated that they were stationed there under the instructions of the 34 BGB Commander.

Afterward, the Jumma youths rescued the Tanchangya woman and brought her to safety. When they informed Rupan Barua, the chowkidar (village guard) of Ward No. 9 in Ghumdhum union, about the incident, he reportedly told them that the RSO members were his men and advised them to stay silent and not speak further about the matter.

It has been reported that the Jumma residents of the area have long been living in fear due to the ongoing activities of Rohingya armed groups and bandits.

It is noteworthy that on 8 October 2025, RSO and ARSA militants abducted a Jum cultivator named Suman Tanchangya from Gorjon Bonia, adjacent to Ward No. 8 of Ghumdhum Union in Naikhyongchari Upazila, and earlier, on 23 September 2025, they abducted another villager named Wamong Tanchangya from Bhalukia in the same union.

The abducted villagers have not yet been found. It has been reported that Chowkidar Rupan Barua was also involved in that incident. He is known to be a key operator in the cross-border trade of Myanmar-made cigarettes and yaba.

It is also noteworthy that earlier, on 16 May 2024, two Tanchangya villagers- Chaila Mong Chakma (29) and Kyamongkho A. Tanchangya (25)- were abducted by Rohingya militants while catching crabs in the Naf River near the No. 5 sluice gate area of Whaikhyang, Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar District.
