Hill Voice, 1 October 2025, Special Correspondent: A Garo girl was raped in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh while she was out to attend a puja. The incident took place on Monday (September 29) night.
According to local sources, the indigenous Garo girl is a ninth-grade student at a high school in the upazila. On Monday afternoon, she went to a park with her friend. In the afternoon, the friend picked the girl up in an autorickshaw to take her home.
At that time, the autorickshaw driver kept taking the girl around, saying that he would show her the puja mandap in Haluaghat upazila town. At one point, he took the girl to a solitary place and raped her.
Then, around 11 pm, the autorickshaw driver dropped the girl off in the Gamaritola area and left. After that, the girl was rescued by local people and taken home.
In this regard, the mother of the rape victim filed a case on Tuesday (September 30) night accusing two people of rape and the police conducted a raid and arrested a young man named Milon involved in the incident. Milon is the son of Jewel Mia of Nayapara village of Jugli union of the upazila.
The victim’s mother said that on Monday (September 29) morning, my daughter’s previous acquaintance, Milon, told my daughter to come to European Park (Salmar Park) on her mobile phone, saying that she would perform puja in the morning. She went there. Later, she roamed around the park and the surrounding areas.
She further said that in the evening, Abul Bashar (22), the son of Azaharul of Nayapara village, took her to the west side of the Kaijongkhali Bridge in Jugli Nayapara in a battery-powered autorickshaw and raped her there. Later, at around 10 pm, he raped her again under the Rustampur Akashmoni tree in Dhara Union of the upazila and left her at the Gamaritola intersection in his autorickshaw.
On receiving the information, the police went to the house of accused Abul Bashar on Monday night. However, he could not be found. The police seized his autorickshaw and took him to the police station. Haluaghat Police Station OC Hafizul Islam Harun said that a case has been filed in this regard with Haluaghat Police Station and one of the accused has been arrested. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the main accused.
