Hill Voice, September 26, 2025, Khagrachhari: Yesterday, September 25, 2025, at around 8:30 pm, a Jumma youth named Ukyanu Marma was forcibly taken away by a team of army personnel from a Mundi shop at Madhupur Bazar, in Khagrachhari headquarters.
At this time, he was forcibly taken away from in front of his friends. It is said that an army team from the 203rd Infantry Brigade at Khagrachhari headquarters arrived in two vehicles there and took Ukyanu away.
According to sources, Ukyanu Marma was eating mundi (noddle like food) with friends at a shop near Madhupur Bazar yesterday. Later, two army vehicles suddenly arrived and forcibly dragged Ukyanu Marma away without any reason. At this time, the shirt and pants he was wearing were torn.
It is learnt that Ukyanu Marma was severely beaten while being taken away in an army vehicle. Later, he was taken to the army cantonment and questioned in the presence of the zone commander, Lieutenant Colonel Khademul Islam, and two high-ranking army officers.
At that time, the incident created widespread outrage on social media. At one point, the student community announced a strong program with an ultimatum if Ukyanu Marma was not released, and due to widespread public outrage, the army was forced to release him at around 10 pm.
Ukyanu Marma is known to be the general secretary of the Khagrachari district branch of the Bangladesh Marma Students Council (BMSC).
It is to be noted that protest programs are being held in various parts of the country, including the three hill districts, following the gang-rape of a class 8 student of Khagrachari Government Girls’ High School by three Bengali settlers on the eastern side of a Buddhist monastery in Singinala No.1 ward of Khagrachari Municipality between 9 pm and 11 pm on September 23, 2025. Ukyanu Marma is known to be leading ordinary students in Khagrachari in this incident.
Many believe that the army took Ukyanu Marma away because he protested the rape.
The incident was strongly condemned and protested in a joint statement by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and the Hill Women’s Federation (HWF). The Bangladesh Marma Students Council (BMSC) also strongly condemned the incident.
