Hill Voice, 2 September 2025, Chattogram: Today, 2 September 2025, Buddhist and Indigenous students submitted a memorandum to the Provost of Atish Dipankar Srigyan Hall at Chittagong University, demanding the allocation of 60 percent of seats for plain-land and hill Buddhist and Indigenous students on a priority basis, in accordance with the Atish Dipankar Srigyan Hall Management and Seat Allocation Policy 2022.
The memorandum stated that in March 2025, when the university administration allocated seats for all halls, including Atish Dipankar Srigyan Hall, a total of 287 seats were allocated in the first phase. Among these, only 161 seats (56.17%) were allotted to plain-land and hill Buddhist students, while 126 seats (43.90%) were allocated to general students. This clearly shows that the Atish Dipankar Srigyan Hall administration did not allocate 60 percent of the seats to plain-land and hill Buddhist Indigenous students as per the policy.
The memorandum further stated that, according to the latest seat allocation update on 19 August 2025, a total of 304 students currently have seats in the hall. Among them, only 162 are Buddhist and Indigenous students from the hills and plains, which constitutes 53.29 percent of the total, while 141 are general students, making up 46.38 percent. It was also pointed out that, despite a significant number of Buddhist and Indigenous students being on the applicants’ list, the hall administration has shown no sincere initiative to allocate seats to them.
At this time, the students put forward the following demands:
1. Ensure 60 percent seat allocation for plain-land Buddhist and Indigenous students before the final voter list for the CUCSU and Hall Union elections is prepared.
2. Allocate seats to the waiting Buddhist and Indigenous applicants on a priority basis.
3. If necessary, accept new applications beyond the waiting list to fulfill the 60 percent seat allocation for Buddhist and Indigenous students.
