12 Jumma shops allegedly shut down by district administration at Alutila tourism

Hill Voice, 1 April 2026, Khagrachari: There have been allegations that at least 12 shops belonging to Jumma people located around the Alutila tourist center under Matiranga upazila of Khagrachari district have been closed by the Khagrachhari district administration.

It is reported that the shops were forcefully closed today (April 1, 2026) at approximately 3:00 PM under the leadership of Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner Md. Anwar Sadat.

According to local sources, a team led by Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner Md. Anwar Sadat reached the Alutila tourist center at around 3:00 pm today. Shortly after, the Jumma shops located outside the tourist center were closed.

At that time, when the local Jummas asked the District Commissioner for the reason, he said, “Your shops have been opened completely illegally. The shop documents are not in order. Nothing is in order with you. So from now on, you will not be able to open the shops.” Saying this, he left the place.

On the other hand, the affected Jumma shopkeepers said that more than 15 Jumma (Tripura) families have been living in the vicinity of Alutila tourist center for a long time. The economic condition of all of them is very deplorable. Since there is no plot for shops within the tourist area, many of them earn a living by running retail shops in the surrounding areas adjacent to the tourist area and support their families. It can be said that those shops are their last resort.

But today, that last resorts have been systematically put a nail in the coffin. The Khagrachari district administration has forcibly closed the shops on the pretext of not having the proper documents and not following the rules and regulations.

Some eyewitnesses said that if you closely monitor, you will see that 90% of the shops in Khagrachhari district headquarters do not have the necessary documents.

It is reported that the affected Jummas have expressed intense anger and disappointment over such immediate action by the Khagrachari district administration.
